What I Would Be Wearing, if I Wasn’t Wearing Sweatpants

Spring in Michigan is a short-lived season: it seems to go from snow to summer overnight. Even during the traditional spring months, it’s cold. While other areas start to break out dresses, t-shirts, and shorts, I’m still wearing jeans and layers. I honestly struggle with what to wear during these times of transition, and this year especially, I found myself drawn to the basics.

In the days leading up to the coronavirus lockdown, I saw all of the spring trends on full-display: florals, puff-sleeves, and colors that could brighten up any day of April-showers. I snagged a puff-sleeve top, just to be on top of the trend, but for most of the looks that I was seeing, it was just too cold to embrace them. Then the world shut down, and spring felt like it was moving in slow-motion: I wanted to brown trees to bud, and the days of spontaneous snow to be in the past. Quarantine made me desperate for any change in scenery to brighten up the view from my apartment windows.

I didn’t expect to spend my entire spring wearing sweatpants. Even as the weather began to break and trees started to turn green, it felt silly to shop for the latest-and-greatest spring pieces because I wasn’t leaving my house. For the rare moments that I haven’t been in sweats or leggings, I’ve been sticking with timeless staples and a few current accessories.

These chewed-hem jeans are a great way to add a distressed jean to your wardrobe, without it looking too youthful. I have these jeans in black, as well, and they are the most-worn pair of jeans in my collection. I’m an advocate for wearing white jeans all-year: they look fresh and tie together white accents in tops and accessories (like the distressing on my denim jacket).

I invested in the Tory Burch flip flops last year, and they are worth the hype. The leather breaks in so nicely, and they elevate any outfit. This black Chanel-dupe purse belongs to my Mom, and I own the same one in light pink. I love how the gold detailing compliments my jewelry.

I’ve been watching the rise of chunky chain necklaces all season, but that look just isn’t my style. My alternative is this Kendra Scott choker, made up of edgy love knots. The size is adjustable and it looks great layered or worn on it’s own. This necklace wasn’t love-at-first-sight and it is an investment piece, but it grew on me and I was able to snag it with a solid sale.

For my fellow shorties out there, a cropped denim jacket can help make your legs look longer, especially when paired with high-waisted bottoms. I got this jacket last year (linked similar) and I like it more than my traditional denim jacket. I knotted my must-have basic tee underneath- I have this in black and white, and it takes all of my self-control not to buy it in every single color.

I know that this season of transition is different than anyone anticipated, but hopefully being able to go through it in sweatpants makes it a little bit easier.

xoxo,

Kaitlyn
