It’s August, which means fall-fashion is in full swing. Brands start releasing their fall lines early to mid-July: the first month of the new season is generally pre-fall transitional pieces. You start to get glimpses of fall colors and trends, but pieces can still feel summery. I start shopping fall in late-July/early-August to pick up pieces that will last longer into the fall. With the retail world still feeling the effects of the pandemic on supply chains and changing consumer habits, if there’s something that you like, BUY IT. Brands are stocking less merchandise over all, and there’s a higher risk that something you like might sell out. Waiting until later in the season to shop is also more challenging now because of those factors. If you have an event or a trip that you are shopping for, SHOP EARLY.
Denim- it’s changing!

I could blame this shift in denim styles on Gen Z, but personally, I think the pandemic has changed all of us. After a year and a half spent in sweatpants and leggings, do you really want to wear your skinny jeans again? It is time to loosen up and opt for a relaxed pair of jeans instead of skinny. These are two of my favorites from Abercrombie: the 90’s ultra high rise straight, and the mom jean. Both are petite friendly, and not super wide.
The straight jeans pair great with low-heeled booties, chunky sneakers, or sandals. These run true to size and come in ten washes.
The mom jeans are cropped, I wear these with my high-heeled ankle boots or heels of any height. They look great dressed up with a higher heel for a night out. These run big in the waist, and come in five washes.

Matching sets: a great way to transition seasons

Where I live, summer weather lasts until October, which I am not complaining about! But, it makes it harder to embrace fall fashion. My solution: linen in fall colors. This matching crop top and pants linen set comes in burnt orange and cream: I opted for the fall color option to be able to wear into the new season. This set looks like it’s ready for a pumpkin patch, but is lightweight and breathable- perfect for a hot day.
My best summer-to-fall transition tip is to look for summer fabrics in fall colors to get the fall look, without the heat. This is good to keep in mind as you’re shopping end-of-season sales to snag transition pieces that you can wear for longer.
Modern Prep

Tiktok calls this trend “old money” and I’m here for the timeless, preppy aesthetic. This look emerged in the summer with graphic tees and tennis skirts, and is blooming into sweatshirts, preppy sweater vests, and pleats. This is great way to add trendy pieces into a workwear wardrobe, or to choose pieces to invest in that will last for seasons to come. There is an emphasis on athleticism and being outside (a reaction to the world being cooped up for so long), and a nostalgia for Kennedy-era prep that combats the fashion world’s overconsumption of goods.
I started with a sweatshirt that I knew I could make look edgier with black mom jeans- an easy way to integrate a new style into my existing style. I got a black and a white tennis skirt this summer, and will be layering them with sweatshirts, sweaters, and athleisure pieces this fall.
